Razorbacks finish second at SECHC Tournament

After beating #8 Tennessee (10-8-1) on Friday, and #4 Georgia (15-11-2) on Saturday, the #1 Arkansas Razorbacks (32-4-0) drew the #6 Ole Miss Rebels (18-6-0) in the Championship game on Sunday. The game got started with the Hogs controlling much of the opening period, limiting the Rebels to just 5 shots in the first period while recording 11 of their own. Despite having a good handle on the game, Arkansas could not break through and the score remained 0-0 after 1 period.

The 2nd period saw the Hogs dominate, recording an additional 27 shots on net and coming very close to scoring on several occasions. Midway through the 2nd period, Arkansas would go on the powerplay and Chris Salmon would finally break through on a rebound that found its way in. Continued pressure from Arkansas would not prove successful, as the Hogs took a 1-0 lead into the final period.

The Razorbacks were able to kill off a penalty to start the 3rd period. However, a second penalty just a minute later gave Ole Miss the fuel to tie the game 1-1. Less than 2 minutes after their goal, a bouncing puck gave Ole Miss a 2-on-1 that they converted on to take a 2-1 lead. The Razorbacks threw everything at Ole Miss in the final minutes, but an Ole Miss empty net goal with 22 seconds left sealed a second-place finish for Arkansas. The Razorbacks recorded 52 shots in the game, and goalie Jozef Dusenka stopped 29 of 31 shots for just his 2nd loss of the season.

Arkansas headed to the SECHC Championship game

The #1 Arkansas Razorbacks (32-3-0) advanced to the SECHC Championship game on Saturday night in a wild 2-1 win over #4 Georgia (14-11-2). The Hogs came out quickly, creating several scoring opportunities and controlling much of the game in the early going. Despite the heavy pressure put on by Arkansas, they were unable to cash in. Georgia gained some life on a late Arkansas penalty, but the score remained 0-0 after 1 period.

After killing off the remainder of the penalty to start the 2nd period, the Griffin Sugasawara-Chris Stovall-Zach Wilson line went to work. Sugasawara found a loose puck on a net-front scramble to put the Razorbacks up 1-0 3 minutes into the period. Stovall and Wilson both assisted on the goal. After sustaining more pressure on the Georgia defense, the Hogs got into penalty trouble by giving Georgia a 5-on-3 advantage. The Dawgs were able to tie things up at 1 apiece on the 2-man advantage. But Arkansas would not be denied as they regained momentum, eventually drawing a Georgia penaltylate in the period. On the ensuing powerplay, Alex Kueser won the faceoff back to Dylan Odelein, who dished it off to Evan Kerr, who gave it right back to Odelein for the one-timer that found its way through traffic and into the top-left corner. That goal closed out the 2nd period with the Razorbacks on top 2-1.

In the third period, Arkansas and Georgia battled fiercely in what was one of the most intense periods of hockey the Razorbacks had been a part of all year. After a few questionable penalties were called on Arkansas, goaltender Jozef Dusenka came up huge. The Hogs survived the Georgia onslaught while down a man in the final minute to hold on for the 2-1 win and punch their ticket to the SECHC Championship. The win marked the 32nd victory of the season, setting a new program record for wins in a season. Dusenka was the Hogs first star of the game, stopping 22 of 23 shots for his 15th win of the season.

The Razorbacks will take on the #6 Ole Miss Rebels (17-6-0) Sunday, February 9th at 2:00pm. The Razorbacks and Rebels met in early December, with the teams splitting a pair of games. Razorbacks’ strong fall sets the table for an exciting spring

The #1 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks (26-3-0) finished off the fall portion of their schedule with a split against #3 Kansas (15-6-0). A packed schedule for the Razorbacks saw them play 29 games during the first semester, the most of any team in the country (with the second-most playing just 23 games). Arkansas began the season with 11 straight wins before dropping a game to Michigan. Following that loss, the Ice Hogs ripped off 13 more consecutive wins. Those collective runs of consecutive wins helped establish Arkansas as the number 1 ranked team in both the Pacific Region and SECHC in every computer ranking.

Scoring has certainly been no issue for the Razorbacks, as they have been held to 2 goals or less in just four games. Arkansas holds national leads for goals per game and total goals by a wide margin at 7.48goals/game and 217 goals total. Moreover, that scoring has been spread throughout the lineup, with 20 players recording 10 points or more and 24 players having recorded a goal so far this season. Goaltending has also been particularly strong, with three goalies sharing time to combine for a team save percentage of .918. Goaltender Jozef Dusenka has put together a stellar season, leading the country in wins with 12. He is also 3rd in the country in shutouts (2), 4th in the country in minutes played (780 minutes), 6th in the country in GAA (1.85 goals against average), and 9th in the country in save percentage (.926).

The outlook for the spring is much shorter than the fall. The Hogs get back on the ice when they hit the road against Missouri State (10-7-1) on January 24th and 25th. Arkansas then hosts DII East Texas Baptist (19-1-1) on January 31st and February 1st. The following weekend, the Razorbacks head to Nashville for the SECHC Tournament on February 6-8, before returning home to celebrate our seniors and finish out the regular season against Alabama (8-7-1) during the weekend of February 14th and 15th. The Hogs then head off to the ACHA National Championships in Frisco, TX at the Comerica Center. Round robin action takes place March 24th, 25th, and 26th, with the semifinals on March 27th and final on March 28th.
