Razorbacks Celebrate Seniors With Wins Over Maryville

The Arkansas Razorbacks(11-0) played host to Maryville University this past weekend. Friday night’s game saw the Hogs jump out to an early lead, as Griffin Sugasawara found Zach Wilson 41 seconds into the game for a shorthanded goal. Just 3 minutes later, Kevin LaPlante sent a shot to the net and Jacob Yaseen found the lose rebound for a powerplay goal. Zach Riley also assisted on the play. With 4 minutes left in the 1st, Sugasawara got involved again by cleaning up a lose rebound. Brad Estrada and Cameron McAtee were credited with the assists. 2 minutes later, Riley found Tevor McLain streaking through the slot for the Hogs 4th goal of the period. The Hogs weren’t finished in the 2nd period, as Kyle Patterson won the faceoff to Yaseen, who finished to put Arkansas up 5-0. Midway through the period, Chris Salmon moved the puck to Wilson, who found Jordan Deskeere in front for the 6th goal of the evening. Maryville was able to break the shutout bid with 5 minutes left in the 2nd period. With under one minute left in the period, McLain found LaPlante just as the Hogs powerplay ended for the 7th goal of the night. Half way through the final period, the Arkansas powerplay was back at it. This time, Sugasawara found Brad Estrada, who sent the puck toward the net, and Salmon found the rebound. Jozef Dusenka made 16 saves in the 8-1 win, his 9th of the season.

On senior night, Arkansas honored six seniors: Grant Deacon, Zach Riley, Chris Salmon, Jozef Dusenka, Dakota Gottlieb, and Jacob Yaseen. Griffin Sugasawara got the Hogs started 6 minutes into the game, finishing off a rebound just as a Hog powerplay ended. Salmon and Brad Estrada contributed the assists. 7 minutes later, the Hogs scored again on the powerplay. This time it was Michael Ellis from Jordan Deskeere and Cameron McAtee. Sugasawara added his second goal of the contest with 4 minutes left in the 1st period, with Kevin LaPlante adding the assist. The 2nd period saw Arkansas continue the scoring. This time Kyle Crews finished off a pass from goalie Jozef Dusenka for the Hogs 4th goal. Trevor McLain found Pavel Salter for the 5th goal just 1:30 later. Maryville would get two on the board before the end of the period, cutting the Arkansas lead to 5-2. Early in the 3rd period, Arkansas gained back the momentum as McAtee scored a shorthanded, unassisted goal. Salmon capped off senior night with a powerplay goal with under 4 minutes remaining. Deacon and McAtee assisted on the goal. Maryville would get one final goal, but the Hogs won 7-3 to get the sweep and improve to 11-0 on the season. Dusenka grabbed his 10th win, making 18 saves on 21 shots.

The University of Arkansas Men’s Hockey team plays in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association. The 2020-21 season will be the team’s thirteenth season as a member of the ACHA competing in Division III. The team’s schedule can be viewed here.
